Why So Much of the World Squeezes Through the Strait of Malacca

Between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, two oceans are connected by a managed corridor. Its value comes from being shorter than the alternatives—and its vulnerability comes from the same fact.

Two oceans approach one corridor

Trade follows the route that saves distance, fuel and time. Repetition turns a natural passage into infrastructure.

A tanker carrying Middle Eastern crude toward East Asia can sail around Indonesia. A container ship connecting Europe and Singapore can take a wider arc. But the shortest practical route between the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific passes through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

The Strait of Malacca runs roughly 930 kilometres between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Near its meeting with the Singapore Strait, the corridor narrows to about 10 miles.3 It is not one uniform pipe. It is a sequence of approaches, shallow areas, bends, traffic lanes, ports and reporting sectors.

The chokepoint is a corridor, not a dot

From the Andaman Sea, ships enter the north-western approach, move along the Malaysian and Indonesian coasts, pass the tight southern reaches and then cross the Singapore Strait toward the South China Sea. A problem at one segment can affect schedules far beyond it.

Westbound and eastbound services arrive from multiple ports and routes.

The route is strategically important because large industrial systems have grown around its efficiency. In the first half of 2025, the US Energy Information Administration estimated 23.2 million barrels per day of petroleum and other liquids transited Malacca—about 29% of global maritime oil flows.1 That included 16.6 million barrels per day of crude oil and condensate, plus 6.5 million of petroleum products.

The February 2026 chokepoint analysis measured 23.2 million barrels per day of oil flows.

EIA’s later August 2026 dataset estimated 16.6 million barrels per day of oil and 5.5 billion cubic feet per day of LNG in the second quarter of 2026.2 The lower snapshot does not erase the corridor’s structural role. It shows why chokepoint statistics must be dated rather than repeated as timeless facts.

It carries systems, not just ships

Energy makes the dependency visible, but the corridor also carries containers, dry bulk, vehicles, chemicals and food. Singapore recorded 44.66 million TEU of container throughput in 2025—but port throughput is not the same as total strait transit: some ships call, some transship cargo, and others pass without entering port.5

Tankers make the corridor central to energy security, but they navigate among many other vessel types.

A busy strait needs road rules

Ships do not simply aim for the gap. Traffic Separation Schemes divide opposing flows into lanes, with separation zones between them. International collision rules, charts, pilotage decisions, speed, tides, draught and crossing traffic still require continuous judgement. The scheme structures movement; it does not automate safety.

Ships keep to the appropriate lane while still accounting for overtaking and crossing traffic.

STRAITREP adds a mandatory reporting layer for specified ships. The operational area is divided into nine sectors: Klang VTS covers sectors 1–5, Johor VTS sector 6, and Singapore VTS sectors 7–9. Reports can include identity, position, course, speed, hazardous cargo and defects.4

The reporting system begins in the north-western operational area.

Surveillance and reporting cannot remove every risk. ReCAAP recorded 108 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore during 2025—104 actual and four attempted, the highest annual total in its 2007–2025 series.7 That is a security challenge, but it should not be confused with evidence that the corridor has ceased functioning.

The alternatives are real, but not free

Ships can use Indonesia’s Sunda or Lombok Straits, depending on draught, origin and destination. Some routes can go much farther around. A diversion adds sailing distance, fuel, charter time, emissions and pressure on substitute corridors. It may also disrupt port rotations and the timed connections of container networks.

Who controls the strait?

No single answer is sufficient. Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore retain sovereignty and jurisdiction over their waters, subject to international law. Under UNCLOS Part III, ships and aircraft enjoy transit passage through qualifying international straits; ships must proceed without delay, follow applicable lanes and comply with safety and pollution rules. Article 44 says bordering states shall not hamper or suspend transit passage.6

The IMO-facilitated Cooperative Mechanism brings the three littoral states together with user states and industry. It supports dialogue, projects and an Aids to Navigation Fund. This is the hidden institution beneath the map: a globally used route maintained through coastal responsibility and wider cooperation.3

Resilience means reducing consequences

No realistic plan makes the strait irrelevant overnight. Resilience comes from several partial measures: alternative routes, strategic inventories, diversified suppliers, pipelines where geography permits, spare port capacity, better navigation data, coordinated enforcement and schedules that can absorb delay.

What makes Malacca a strategic chokepoint?
A chokepoint is where physical constraint meets accumulated dependence.
The strait matters because the world repeatedly chose the efficient route—and built schedules, refineries, ports and expectations around that choice.
